Last week, Blogs From Geekdom witnessed the birth of the first-ever Tree City Comic Con in Boise, Idaho. But the small size of this novice con did not stop the cosplayers one bit…
Tree City was only the second Con I have had the opportunity to attend. It was definitely smaller than Salt Lake, and you could tell that there were a few kinks to work out, but over-all, it was very enjoyable. In many ways, there were some perks to being smaller: The aisles were not nearly as crowded and it was easier to get Cosplay pics… more on that later…
With this being the maiden voyage of Tree City Comic Con, there were not as many big name celebrities The big draws to this Con were John Rhys-Davies (Indiana Jones, LOTR) and Mark Sheppard (Supernatural, Firefly, Warehouse 13). There were many other classic crowd favorites too, such as Marina Sirtis (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek: The Original Series), and Vern Troyer (Austin Powers). Even the arrest of Nicolas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) by the Boise police didn’t stop him from showing up!
The Boise cosplay was as active as ever. I’ve broken them down into three major groups: Heroes, Hotties and Harleys.
Heroes – Heroic characters from the movies and shows we love and also the villains that make them look so good. Ranging from the obvious (Batman) to the obscure (Ben Franklin!), these heroes cover a wide range of nerdly interests. The most popular themes were Star Wars and Doctor Who.
Hotties – Girls that love to show off how good they look in any outfit. Some are professional cosplayers, but most are just ladies that are comfortable getting lots and lots of pictures taken! Boise has several Disney princesses, Lara Croft, Eowyn and many others. We even saw a few ladies dressed as male characters, such as Ash from Evil Dead and Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street.
Harleys – A sub-genre of both groups above, comic cons are loaded with Harley Quinns from the Batman comics. Pictured here are just three of the best costumes from the plethora of Harleys running around the con.
Cosplay takes on many different forms, from a skirt and a tank top to intricate homemade armor. Whatever the look, cosplay is a fun way to enjoy a con. It’s also a cheap way to get lots of great “celebrity” pics!
What are YOUR favorite cosplay costumes? Let me know in the comments!
I cosplayed as Eowyn from LOTR.

The little Comic Conventions are sometimes best. Thats what it was like when I went to our local one last November. (Missed it this year cause they changed the date and I somehow didn’t get notified 😦 but oh well) There was a couple hundred people there but it was pretty cool. Especially for my first time ever going to a comic convention 😛

That was rude of them to not inform you! lol It was nice being so small. My wife didn’t sell too many of her books, but everyone there saw her booth! It is nice being able to walk through the crowds!

Yeah XD but oh well. Next year I will go (wether or not I will be a weeping angel again I don’t know 😛 ) and thats a bummer…at least people saw the booth though! That in itself was a good thing! But it’s sad that they are missing out on some great books!! I remember when I went to our comic con I kept spending a lot of time around the booths with all the books….and bought a lot or books to… you know you’re a book nerd when….

You’re a book booth groupie! I like you people! It make hanging out in the same 8×8 square for 10 hours more bearable! Someone to talk to…

Haha okay….Though I’m in Canada so unless you come to conventions in Alberta I might not get a chance to stop by one of your booths…but I will still keep an eye out!

I would LOVE to go to a Canadian Con (Comic Con-ada?)! But we’re in Oregon. Alberta is a ways away!

Fair enough 😛 but if you ever find yourselves at a con in the Southern Alberta area let me know and I shall do my best to make my way there 😛 (any excuse to go to a convention….especially if I leave with a couple books and nerdy merch)
