‘Tis the Season to be Nerdly

With Christmas-time in full swing, many decorations start going up around town and in people’s homes. The BFG home is no different! However, we’ve added a few touches straight outta Geekdom…

When we decided to decorate a large pine tree in our living room, it had to be done our way. Sure, we have the obligatory ornaments the kids made at church and school. We even have a few basic colored orbs. But my favorites are the trinkets that come right out of the geek universe!

Darth Vader welcomes the baby Lord in proper Sith-Lord style. When the lights go on, he utters, “Impressive. Most impressive. But you’re not a Jedi yet!” You have to be careful which light strand you plug him into though. If you have him jacked into a blinking strand, he turns into a rapper with each blink: “Impr… Impr… Impr…”

Here you see not only our Pinky and the Brain ornaments, but a green M&M Princess Leia ornament too! We have the entire collection of Star Wars M&M characters hiding among the branches somewhere.

Jack shows up in snowman form to really give that wintery feel. This ornament came from Jack-in-the-Box restaurant, duh! It’s a good thing it’s Jack, because, “No child wants to play with a Charlie-in-the-Box!”

Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber from VeggieTales bring some health food to our Christmas season.

Tiny Harry Potter pals adorn the tree as well. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, and Snape are prowling around our tree.

What self-respecting geek would have a Christmas tree without a TARDIS hanging prominently from its boughs? Geek Spawn and I picked this up for the Wifey last summer and hid it away for 6 months waiting to surprise her. I would love to put a Weeping Angel up on top of the tree, but the Wifey would never let that happen. That spot is for an angel announcing Jesus’ birth, not sending people to other times. 😦

That brings us to the manger scene. We have several Nativity displays, so this year, we decided to have fun with one of them and nerd it up a bit. Our cast: Darth Vader as the angel; Spider-man, Batman and Superman as the wise men; Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swan looking over their Lego flock (including a Chewbacca mini-fig and Minecraft pig); Leia and Han as Mary and Joseph; and Mickey Mouse as the Baby Jesus. No, we don’t worship Mickey; he was just the right size to fit there. It had to be either Mickey or Yoda, but we had lots of Star Wars already…

Do you have any fun geekly things for your Christmas decorations? Tell me about it below!
