Film Food: The Football (as a pizza) from Gus

Are you ready for some football!? …pizza?

Typically, when a birthday or special event rolls around, I like to make a pizza to match the theme. In this case, it was the Super Bowl. Or perhaps just to match the movie Gus! 😉 Or perhaps to match Necessary Roughness, The Longest Yard, The Program, or any other football movie ever!

Actually making this pizza is not too hard, but it does take time. I’ve done all kinds of images with my pizzas, and comparatively, this one is pretty simple! If you don’t have your own pizza dough recipe, I included mine in this blog:

Pizza Dough Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1 pkg yeast
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 Tbl shortening
  • 1 tsp salt

Dissolve the yeast in the water while you prepare the other ingredients. Mix them together (I use a Kitchen Aid mixer) and then add the water. Allow time to rise. Roll dough into desired shape…

Football Ingredients

  • Tomato sauce
  • Cheese
  • Pepperoni
  • 1/2 mozzarella cheese stick

Shape the dough into an oval with pointy ends. That’s your basic football shape. Now, to make it look like a football. Put the tomato sauce on the bottom layer (I like to add Italian seasoning on it at this point, but it’s not necessary). The cheese layer is next. Put the cheese under the pepperoni, because we want the pepperoni color to show up. Pepperoni goes on top, giving it that nice reddish brown coloring. Tear your cheese stick in half vertically and place in in the middle. Rip few strings of the cheese stick to make the laces. And that’s it!

Throw it in a 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes. Watch it during the last few minutes till it cooks the way you like it. My recipe made enough dough for 2 football pizzas. It’s best to cook them separately to make sure they cook all the way through

The verdict? Uh… it’s pizza! Even when it’s bad, it’s good! All of the teens at the Super Bowl party scarfed it right down. It was definitely a hit!

Do you make your own pizza? What do you do different? Would you eat a football pizza? Tell me about it!
