Film Food: Baby Groot (as a cupcake) from Guardians of the Galaxy

Groot4

I am snack.

The Nerdling wanted to invite a bunch of friends over to watch Guardians of the Galaxy for her birthday party. What better snack to go along with it? Groot cupcakes!

When the movie is all wrapped up, a baby version of Groot shows up dancing to the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.” It’s pretty stinkin’ adorable. My daughter was even wearing her baby Groot tshirt at the party! It was the perfect snack for her…

Ingredients

  • Chocolate cupcakes
  • Frosting
  • Oreos
  • Homemade gingerbread cookies

Groot1
We didn’t know how many to expect, so we made a LOT of cupcakes! 60 of them. You can’t tell in the picture, but I even splurged and bought the foil cupcake wrappers. I thought it gave it that futuristic sci-fi look.

Groot3
Once the cakes come out of the oven, that’s when the hard part begins. I frosted each cupcake individually then dipped them into a bowl of crushed Oreos. These served as my soil or dirt. It was messy and kinda boring. Sadly I didn’t do the best job crushing them, so the “dirt” chunks were really large. But, man, they were good!

Groot2
While I was busy working on the cupcakes, Wifey was doing the hard part. She prepared some gingerbread dough earlier in the day and was painstakingly cutting each one to look like Groot. It was quite the tedious process. We did NOT end up with 60 Groots. More like 25.

Groot5
We cooked the Groots, let them cool, then stuck them in our cupcakes. Boom, “We are Groot.” Even The Nerdling’s tshirt!

The verdict: These were a lot of fun and very delicious. The Oreos kept falling off due to their size, but they still tasted good. They were a lot of work and totally worth it. They made the perfect addition to The Nerdling’s party.

What do you think? Would you give these a try? Maybe a few less of them…
