Grrrrrrrrrr…. Why do I do it?
Every time. I see an ad come across my Facebook saying something like “Hilarious Prom Pics” or “32 Things That Will Remind You of Your Childhood.” Right now on my Facebook is “13 TV Deaths We Still Can’t Accept.” I almost clicked on it! We want to know these things. To relive nostalgic moments from our past. And ordinarily that would be fine…
But this isn’t about having fun with trivia. This is about advertising!
Answers.com is the worst! You click over to find “15 Odd Things about America that Americans Don’t Realize” and it brings up the title page. Then you sit there for several seconds or minutes (depending on your computer) while the page loads various advertisements: Schwans, Progressive Insurance, Maurices, whatever. Then it’s also full of links to other Answers.com lists.
This is understandable because they want to get paid. Fine. Go USA! But here’s the rub. You haven’t even begun the list yet! This is the title page. Rather than having a list of 15 pictures and captions, you have to click “NEXT >>” to go on. After several seconds or minutes (depending on your computer), the page will open the first picture without a description. So you click “NEXT >>” again. After several seconds or minutes (depending on your computer), the first part of the picture’s caption will appear with all new advertisements. So you click “NEXT >>” again. After several seconds or minutes (depending on your computer), the second part of the picture’s caption will appear with all new advertisements. Congratulations! If the picture only has two caption pages, you’re ready to move on to the second odd thing about America that Americans don’t realize.
Not all sites do the click-the-“NEXT”-button thing. Some really do just have one page full of fun observations.
But, every time I absent mindedly click on an Answers.com list, I instantly regret it. 90% of the time, I close it before finishing even half the list. It’s just so annoying to wait and wait and wait for it to load every 1/3rd of every item on the list.
It’s part of the interweb. We have to put up with a certain amount of advertising. But, come on! Better ways are out there!
