Talking with Geek Spawn, we decided that we should have some egg nog. Of course, being May, nog is not easy to come by. So, we searched the interweb for a recipe that used ingredients we had on hand. Maybe I’m just a poor cook, but my recipe came out ridiculously bad!
Here is the recipe for “Luscious Eggnog” as found on Allrecipes.com.
- 3 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/3 cup sugar
- salt to taste
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
And the cream:
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
1. In a heavy saucepan, combine eggs, white sugar, and salt; gradually stir in milk. Stirring constantly, cook for 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat, until mixture just coats a metal spoon. Remove from heat, and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Place saucepan over ice water until custard cools, and then refrigerate until chilled.
2. In a chilled bowl, combine heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until stiff peaks form.
Stir in rum and yellow food coloring. Fold whipped cream mixture into the cooled custard. Pour into serving bowl, and sprinkle with nutmeg. Serve immediately.
(The crossed out words are the steps that I skipped (or forgot to do)). It could just be my imagination, but that doesn’t even look like eggnog! It looks like whipped cream. Thick and fluffy. Not noggy at all!
Then came the taste-test…
The verdict: Ugh! I don’t know what I did wrong. But it was something. It tasted like scrambled egg flavored whipped cream. Just not right. The Nerdling described it as “chunky and bluh.” (At least I had my official Christmas Vacation Marty Moose mug to drink it out of!) After 3 bites, I gave up and made pudding.
Fortunately, there are many many many more recipes I can try! Keep checking back, I’ll find one someday. Have you got a good one that you like? Comment me!
