Silence! It’s a Doctor Who Post!

Silence3
It’s been far too long since I blogged about The Doctor. I feel that a periodical Doctoring is always a good thing. Specifically, today is about the Silence…

Throughout the fifth series, the phrase “Silence will fall” keeps popping up. In true Doctor Who form, they carry this plot thread through the entire season. But, at the end of the season, they don’t explain what it means. They leave us hanging.

In the first episode of series 6, The Impossible Astronaut, we finally meet the Silence. Tall men in Men In Black-style suits, with creepy, vaguely-featured giant heads reminiscent of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.”

These guys are creepy. Like Dementor creepy. Like the Gentlemen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer creepy. Here’s the real nifty part, as soon as you look away, you forget that you even saw them! You’re just left with the thoughts they put in your head. They’re so easy to forget, characters take to marking a tally on themselves when they see them, just so they realize that it happened.

DOCTOR WHO S11.2 EPISODE 2

So, here’s to you, The Silence! Truly awesome bad guys in the Doctor Who universe!

  1. Ooh, the Silence were awesome and so terrifying! The only Doctor Who villains that were better, in my opinion, were the Weeping Angels.

    • Well, yes, the Weeping Angels are particularily awesome, but they’ve been talked about to death. I went for a different creepy villain this time! 🙂
