Transformers hit theaters in 2007 amidst a huge advertising buzz. And it was over-the-top Michael Bay action. Complete with slow-mo shots of giant robots and everything.
It is fun to watch. Some of the characters are cheesy, some of the dialogue is awful, some of the action is ridiculous. But it is fun to watch!
Nutshell plot: Sam Witwiki tries to eBay a pair of glasses from his great great grandfather, catching the attention of various transforming robots that have a connection to old grandpappy. This leads to a hidden Transformer and the ultimate source of Transformer energy, the All-Spark.
Shia LaBeouf (Even Stevens, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) stars as Sam. He is joined by Josh Duhamel and Megan Fox among others. Megan Fox brings up an interesting feature of this movie: the girls. Not only are the girls in this film not ugly, but they are all gorgeous! Every single one. Obviously Megan Fox, but also the computer whiz, the girls in the car that comes to life, and even the girl that has an Autobot do a flip over top of her. Not that I’m complaining, but really? Not one average looking girl in the entire city of Los Angeles?
I read on IMDb that the producers limited the dialogue of the Decepticons to make them more mysterious. I think it was because they just didn’t have anything interesting to say. Megatron’s first words? Not “Where am I?” or “How long was I frozen?” Not even “Happy birthday!” No, he wakes up and says, “I am Megatron!” Wow. That’s good stuff.
While it’s not one that I watch often, Transformers 1 does have some fun moments, spectacular effects and watchable acting. Block out some of the cheap crude jokes (Bumble Bee pee?) and this movie is alright.
Tune in tomorrow for the review of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
