The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold. Part 2 (out of 4) in the ever growing Cutting Edge series. That’s right, they took a romantic dramedy sports movie and make a franchise out of it! Read on to see if it’s worth your time…
A quick refresher of The Cutting Edge: Snobby ice princess loses her figure skating partner at the ’88 Olympics. During the same Olympics, up and coming hockey phenom suffers an injury which takes him out of the game. He ends up skating with her, they don’t get along at first, then they fall in love, bam!, they skate together at the ’92 Olympics. Pretty good movie really!
14 years later, a straight-to-video sequel appears. Now, the snobby daughter of our heroes in part one is a solo skater trying to become a couples skater. On vacation she meets a handsome competitive roller blader. We have to assume that more than 14 years have actually passed as both characters have a drink in their hand every time they’re not on the ice.
Our Going for the Gold ice princess is played by Christy Carlson Romano. This former Disney channel star (Even Stevens) is now all growds up, drinking and dropping some more colorful language than in her Disney days. But really not too much. It’s hard to see her as an adult for those of us that remember her from Even Stevens because she still looks very much the same, only without the braces. She does a pretty good job here. She is still very pretty and she has a very expressive face.
The male lead is played by Ross Thomas. We know him as Bethany Hamilton’s brother in Soul Surfer and from such hits as American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile and Dance Flick. His role as the cocky surfer/roller blader was as predictable as the rest of the movie. But he did have a few humorous moments.
Is it worth seeing? No. There are much much better skating movies out there. But, I am a completionist. I can’t just let it go. I now have to go out and find copies of it’s little siblings: The Cutting Edge 3: Chasing the Dream and The Cutting Edge: Fire and Ice. I’m sure my wifey can’t wait! 😉
Have you seen this one? How about the original? It was good! Let me know your favorite! Comment me!
