This Netflix special came up recently. Maybe it should have stayed hidden.
I really like Bill Murray. I laugh at, like, everything he does. Except this. What is this thing? It’s no Scrooged, that’s for sure. The whole show is about a sad Bill Murray failing to put on a variety show during a snowstorm in New York City. None of his guests show up, so he falls into a depression which slowly – very slowly – comes back to a pseudo-happiness by the end. Instead of celebrity guests, he has the hotel staff (played by celebrity guests) sing Christmas songs. There is almost no break in between the songs, but that’s okay, because the story is just depressing.
Chris Rock, George Clooney, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, Buster Poindexter, Paul Schaefer, and Miley Cyrus all appear briefly. I’m almost ashamed to say it, but I think Miley was the best guest he had.
You would think with so many comedians, the show might actually be funny. But no. No it isn’t. Bill Murray summed it up best himself when he said:
Bottom line, don’t bother. If you want to watch a funny and entertaining Christmas special full of (early 90s) celebrity guest stars, watch the Pee Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special. Really. Its a lot of fun and runs circles around A Very Murray Christmas.
